I don’t know about all Doberdanes, but I can say I feel very lucky to have this one. My merle Doberdane, Opal, turned six months old this week. Today, she is at the vet’s being spayed and the house is very empty! She is an exceedingly loving dog who wants to be with me all the time, leaning against my legs, sitting on my feet, or just following along. To date, she has demonstrated few behavior problems. As with all puppies, we went through a chewing/biting and then jumping phase, but with gentle persuasion, the nipping turned into “kiss, kiss” and the jumping has, for the most part, stopped. (I still have to remind her when she gets a bit too excited when I come home late from work or a strange car pulls in the driveway.) She does like to chase three of my six cats but has not seemed interested in harming them. (I’m not sure why she doesn’t chase the other three, but she will just walk by and ignore them.) She is also usually gentle with my elderly beagle, but sometimes bowls her over with exuberance. We are using a spray bottle of water as a reminder when they are outside together. I have found that she learns very quickly and wants to please. So far, Opal knows commands for “sit,” “come,” “hi” (to shake hands), “stay,” “lie down,” “give,” “up” (to get in the truck), “in” (to go in the house), “easy” (when accepting a treat), “bring”, “kiss-kiss,” “bed,” and is working on “crawl.” Obedience is still a work in progress, but I’d say she follows directions about 85% of the the time. She definitely knows what the word “no” means. For more socialization, I am planning to take her to obedience class in the near future but wanted to have her spayed first. For new owners, I’d suggest building a strong bond early on as these pups grow fast–Opal now weighs 83 lbs. and is about 25 inches tall at the shoulder–and can be very strong willed. For exercise, she plays in the yard, fetching toys and “zooming” when I tell her to run. I have a wireless, invisible fence which we started using when she was about four months old and she has not broken the boundaries since her first shock. (I followed the training guide, but have left a few flags up as constant reminders.) All in all, this Doberdane has been a wonderful addition to my family!
